Casting the Novel

TOM:

Evidence
“He looked upon to see a strange, new face on the other side of the bars. It was a boy somewhat older than himself, with bristly red fair and freckles.” - Page 44

“He can melt anyone’s heart with those wide, innocent eyes.” - Page 13

“Around people Tom was courteous.” - Page 67.

“Around important people Tom was courteous. He asked how they were and listened politely to the answers. He brought drinks to his mothers and opened doors for his grandfather. He was thoughtful and yet - There was something off about everything Tom did. He brought his mother drinks, but the glass didn’t always seem clean. He opened the door for his grandfather, but he let it swing shut on the old man’s heel. It wasn’t quite enough to make him fall, and it could have been an accident. Everyone trusted Tom because he had such an open innocent face. And yet - “he’s an unnatural little weevil,” growled Tam Lin.” - Page 67.

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
With the quotes that we had found, we wanted to find someone who had a very open, almost baby face. However, if you were to annoy him, it would be possible to imagine his face in a scowl. From what we’ve read in the book, we pictured someone who is very two-faced and is very willing to stab you in the back. Someone who was decent looking and looked trustworthy. Of course, the person would also have to fit the physical description of Tom.

With a seemingly innocent face, red hair and freckles, this person matches the description of Tom perfectly. Not only that, but the person is also wearing a suit and looks every bit the rich kid that Tom is. Our chosen Tom also has pretty wide eyes that can be mistaken as innocent. Tom’s gift is the ability to deceive others. On the outside, he looks like he is completely honest, but on the inside he is a cold hearted soulless little boy. If you were to use your imagination, it wouldn’t be hard to picture the person in the photo twisting his features up into a sinister glare.

MARIA:

Evidence
“I’m not a dum-dum! It’s mean and nasty to eat bullfrogs! I don’t think it’s funny at all” Page 16

“She was taller and thinner, and she looked very adult in her slim black dress. Her hair fell in a shiny veil over her shoulders...” Page 152.

“Rosa said they didn’t give you a dinner. She’s so mean! I have a dog at home, and if he doesn’t get fed, he howls. Do you like mango juice? It’s my favourite.”

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
Before even searching for a character, our group agreed that the actress picked must have a very charming look to her with a sweet, angelic face. She must also look like she cries easily, as the description in the book conveys. It would also be best if she appeared to be very optimistic, caring, and sensitive. From the quotes that we found in the book, we have determined those attributes.

Maria is the same age as Tom. We decided to use Maria as Abigail Breslin because in the photo portrayed, she looks very optimistic. With her sweet smile, Abigail Breslin looks every bit the angelic person that Maria is. Not only that, but Maria is extremely talkative, just as a young girl would be. She is friendly and cares for Matt, even after she figures out that he is a clone. From Abigail’s appearance, we can see that she has a very sweet and warm vibe. It is also not hard to imagine her bursting into tears because of a small comment that someone would make, like Maria does in the novel. Abigail Breslin looks like she would also be very sensitive and caring.

EL PATRON:

Evidence
“He was extremely thin, with shoulder-length white hair neatly combed beside a face so seamed and wrinkled, it hardly seemed real.” - Page 54, The House of the Scorpion.

“He was wearing a dressing gown. and his knees were covered by a blanket.” - Page 54.

“The same men who had taken Rosa now entered, gently lifted El Patron into a wheelchair, and rolled him away.” - Page 58.

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
With Farmer’s description of El Patron, we knew we were to search for someone who looked abnormally old. Someone who was who looked 148 years old. He must look intimidating to most people but still have a glint of friendliness in his eye. We agreed that since El Patron was filthy rich, we needed someone who could appear as cocky and superior.

The man shown in this photo is the greatest representation of El Patron because he matches him perfectly. El Patron is a older man, with grey hair that is combed to the side. The man in the photo is also a older man, with grey hair. El Patron is from a Mexican descent so he has olive coloured skin, just as the man in the photo. El Patron is also in a wheel chair, just as the man in the photo. This man also has an intimidation factor which El Patron was described to have. With that said, this man is perfect for the role of El Patron.

TAM LIN:

Evidence
“They were thick-necked and brutal, with flattened noses and scars wandering across their arms and faces.  - Page 63.

They both had curling, brown hair that grew low upon their foreheads, ruddy faces.” - Page 63.

“Tam Lin is the one with interesting ears.”  - Page 63.

“Tam Lin’s ears appeared chewed, they were so misshapen. But when Matt looked into Tam Lin’s eyes, he was surprised to see a glint of friendliness.” - Page 63.

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
When we first read about Tam Lin, we had some trouble deciding whether he was an Asian man who happened to be living in Ireland, or an actual Irishman. Because of the way he spoke, using terms like ‘lassie’ and ‘lad’, we came to the conclusion that it was the latter. That meant that the celebrity we found would have to fit all the descriptions that the book gave, as well as fit what we had visualized him to look like.

Tam Lin has a body guard physique, meaning big muscles, a large body, a sort of rough, mean look, so we decided to use the wrestler Batista. Batista has a larger face, with a thick sturdy neck. Not only that, but he also has an intimidating look, while still having the glint of friendship in his eye. It would take some imagination, but we could picture him cracking into a smile and showing a nicer, caring side. Although he does not have “chewed up, misshapen ears”, Batista fits all other descriptions of Tam Lin.

MATT:

Evidence
“Matt skirted around the edge of these festivities. He knew he’d be confined to Celia’s apartment during the party. Big deal, thought Matt, scuffing his shoes along a newly laid stretch of white carpet.” Showing he’s stubborn. Page 204

“Now I know he’s an aristocrat.” Page 262

Page 275 “Matt thought this was a brilliant argument, and he couldn’t see why the Keeper was so upset. El Patron would have seen the logic of it in an instant.”

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
Because the novel is written in Matt’s point of view, we didn’t get many descriptions of him. Thus, we chose to represent his personality instead of his physical features. Based on what we were able to find, the celebrity we found needed to be younger, about 8 to 10 years old, and have a very bright, curious face. These are two of the characteristics that we had identified Matt to have. The celebrity also needs to look observant and always aware.

Freddie Highmore fits all the requirements that we wanted. He has a bright smile, and looks like he is always curious and wanting to know more. It is not hard to picture him in a downcast mood if Celia were to deny him something. Freddie Highmore also looks very friendly and observant. We chose to use a younger Freddie though, about aged 10. Aside from not having olive skin, Freddie Highmore is the perfect Matteo Alacran.

CELIA:

Evidence
“She had black hair and olive skin like Celia.” Page 9
“It’s the fat old cook...” Page 10
“I love you more than anything in the world,” Page 12

Initial Thoughts & Reasoning
It was a bit harder to find evidence for Celia as the book did not give many descriptions on her. Generally, Celia is just a side character and is one of the few that actually care for Matt. After thorough searching, we were able to find out a few things. The celebrity that we chose would have to be Mexican, as the book specifically says that she has ‘olive skin’ and have a very warm, motherly look about her. However at the same time, she would have to be able to be stern, as Celia sometimes is with Matt.

After browsing for a bit, we decided that Maria Canals Barrera from Wizards of Waverly Place would. Although she’s isn’t overweight as Farmer described Celia to be, Maria C. Barrera fits all other requirements. On Wizards of Waverly Place, she is the mother of the three young main characters. Because of this, we already know that Maria C. Barrera is capable of portraying everything a mother needs to be like; warm, caring, and worrying.
